About International Student Services

About the ISS

Mission Statement:

International Student Services (ISS) welcomes and supports prospective and current F-1 students to achieve their personal, educational, or career goals at Metropolitan Community College.


Purpose Statement:

ISS reviews applications for admission, provides general immigration and academic advising, and liases with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies involved with F-1 students.

Naomi M. Greelis

Naomi Greelis has been assisting international students in various capacities since 1999. She received her master's degree in intercultural relations with a focus in higher education administration, student affairs and international education exchange from Lesley University. Greelis holds a bachelor's degree in International Studies and a second bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Sociology from Central College. She enjoys helping F-1 students succeed in their personal and educational goals at Metropolitan Community College.

Ernestine F. Hawkins
DSO and International Student Services associate

Ernestine Hawkins graduated from Metropolitan Community College with a degree in Administrative Secretary in 1989. During her 25 years at MCC, she has worked in multiple positions.  She started out as a receptionist in counseling/advising at the South Omaha Campus and moved on to the secretary position.  She then transferred to the Fort Omaha Campus and worked in Central Registration.  From there she worked in Enrollment Management and assisted with the process of reviewing international students' files and processing I-20s. From there she worked in Admissions to admit students into various health programs.  She now works in International Student Services and has been working with intenrational students for more than 18 years.


Kathy Owens
DSO and International Student Services specialist

Kathy Owens has held various roles at MCC in instruction and student support beginning in 1998. She developed and taught a course in U.S. citizenship preparation, taught American Government and Human Relations courses as an adjunct instructor, and assisted MCC students in the Learning and Tutoring Centers as well as the Records office. She holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Political Science from UNO and a master’s degree in teaching from College of Saint Mary. 

Betty Gitari
International Student Services clerk

Betty Gitari is an international student from Kenya. She came to the USA in August 2017, and she is currently under the Human Services Degree Transfer program at MCC. She has previously worked with Savanis Bookshop, Happy Life Children's Home and Giants Foundation Health Services after completion of her high school certificate in August 2015. She is now a part-time clerk in International Student Services. She is social and loves art, music, and singing.

Lisa Müller
International Student Services clerk

Lisa Müller is an international student from Germany. After graduating from high school in 2016, she lived two years in Maryland as an Au-Pair before coming to Omaha, NE. Lisa is currently under the food and event management program at MCC and expects to become a successful event manager. She is a cordial person who loves to interact with people. Traveling around the world is what she loves the most and she has already been in 25 states in the US, many different European countries and China.
