Cinco de Mayo Celebration

21st Annual virtual Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Mistress of Ceremonies—Elizabeth Vazquez, OUTREACH SPECIALIST VETERANS UPWARD BOUND

Keynote speaker: Ernesto Mejia, Vice President, CoolSpeak, LLC

Ernesto Mejia, the proud son of Mexican immigrants, is a true example of the American dream. Diagnosed with the rare disease of Guillain-Barré Syndrome at the age of 16 that left him temporarily paralyzed, he was not supposed to be a successful student, much less a College Dean of Students. Through his hardships, Ernesto learned to never give up on life, he now speaks to students, parents and teachers about overcoming obstacles and never giving up on the American dream: education.

Musical Entertainment

Grammy Award winning Mariachi Los Camperos, Los Angeles, California

Los Camperos has existed for nearly 60 years and is noted for demanding musical arrangements that highlight the individual skills and voices of the players. The ensemble employs the finest musicians from Mexico and the United States and has performed for audiences worldwide. Los Angeles–based Mariachi Los Camperos’ abundant accolades, including multiple Grammy awards and nominations and highly praised performances on premier concert stages such as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Getty Center, can easily obscure the fact that its leaders come from humble roots, deep within a mariachi tradition shaped by family and community.
