Blake McKune Memorial Scholarship

Blake McKune

The Blake McKune Memorial Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Blake McKune. Blake passed away in an accident on October 28, 2018—he will forever be 17 years old. During his time with us, Blake’s kind and compassionate heart, and his authentic and free spirit touched the lives of many. He had a wonderful sense of humor, many friends and he loved bringing happiness to people’s lives.

Blake loved being active. Through junior high and high school he participated in hockey, wrestling, and rugby. He could be found in the weight room at all hours of the night and day. His competitive spirit lifted others and he was a true teammate—in every sense of the word.

He had a deep appreciation for being outdoors including hunting, fishing, and kayaking in the mountains of Colorado and on the lakes around Omaha.

Blake had a passion for God and was strong in his faith. He was active in the youth ministry at his church, the Water’s Edge where he loved going on mission trips and serving people.

Blake’s goal was to be a firefighter. He envisioned himself in a role in which he could protect, serve and save lives. This goal was developed as a direct result of his enrollment in the Fire Sciences Program through the career academy at Metropolitan Community College. Although he was only a part of the program for a short time before his passing, the program and this goal provided a direction and focus for Blake that had been missing. It is our hope that this scholarship will help to afford others the opportunity to be a part of this program and that they will be able to accomplish their goals, to realize their dreams, and to maximize their potential. Through this, Blake’s legacy will live on, allowing his light to shine through others and fulfilling his vision for saving lives.

Scholarship will be awarded to a fire science career academy student:

  • Career Academy Students
  • A high school cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at time of application
  • Full- or part-time student
  • Financial need not required, but may be considered

Scholarships are usually offered during the spring and fall quarters. Scholarship availability varies depending on donor giving.
