Timothy L. Dempsey Memorial Scholarship

Tim DempseyTim Dempsey was a criminal justice professional and native of Omaha. He graduated from Omaha Central High School, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Dempsey also earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from UNO. Teaching was always his vocation as education was very important to him. For more than 25 years, Dempsey served as an adjunct instructor for UNO, College of Saint Mary and Metropolitan Community College.

Before starting his law enforcement career, Dempsey worked for the Omaha Public Schools in several capacities including security and coaching. Over the years, he served on numerous boards and commissions including Nebraska’s Crime Commission, Juvenile Justice Commission and as a board member of Nebraska’s Office of Violence Prevention.

At the time of his death in 2016, Dempsey had been a member of the MCC Board of Governors since 2013. His leadership helped to provide access to quality, affordable education to our students. Dempsey said of his commitment to MCC, “the most important role of the college was the education and welfare of the students.”

This scholarship was established to create a long-term partnership between the MCC Board of Governors and Tim Dempsey’s family and to carry out his legacy in education and criminal justice. This scholarship will provide a $500 per year book allowance for a student who is awarded the Board of Governor’s Dempsey Scholarship. Remaining funds will be used for books scholarships for other students completing their associate degree in criminal justice.
