Credit for Work Experience Guide
Alternatives to completion of HMRL 1010 include: selected military training, (see the American Council on Education standards), a combination of courses from other colleges, and receiving credit based upon work experience. There is no CLEP examination available to meet this course requirement. This guide will provide information to assist the student in successfully petitioning for college credit for HMRL 1010 based upon the student's demonstration of knowledge of the course subject matter.
The student must prepare a portfolio documenting experiences and supporting the request for credit with appropriate evidence. The portfolio is a formal document that defines learning acquired through non-college experiences. The portfolio is an exercise in self-evaluation and requires the student to relate past learning experiences to current educational goals. Students must demonstrate the ability to organize documentation in an orderly and systematic manner. Clear, concise writing is essential. Portfolio review will be done by the HMRL 1010 Independent Faculty.
Documentation pertaining to each of the HMRL 1010 course objectives will be considered acceptable when it is submitted in portfolio form as outlined below:
1. Job Preparedness
In this section the student must demonstrate successful job seeking skills, resume writing skills, and appropriate social skills. Documentation must be provided for each of the following:
- A resume.
- A cover letter for a position in the student's career area.
- A completed application for employment using Metropolitan Community College's staff application form. (Applications are available through the MCC Human Resources Office or the MCC website.)
2. Social Skills
In this section the student must address skills in interpersonal communications, emotional control, dealing with difficult people, self-awareness, motivation, conflict resolution, leadership, and other relationship skills. Documentation demonstrating your mastery of these social skills include:
- Excerpts from performance reports
- Specific supervisor appraisals (other than standard performance reports)
- Evidence of successful attendance at workshops, seminars or in-house training programs.
To complete the section, the student must write a short paper (2 pages or less) describing a difficulty they had in this area, how they overcame it, and what they learned from that experience.
3. Teamwork Skills
In this section the student must demonstrate evidence of understanding of the theory of teamwork and skill in application of theory in teamwork settings.
- Provide evidence of successful experiences in a team such as a team award or a supervisor's written commendation. (Mere membership in a team does not constitute successful performance.)
- Provide evidence of understanding of theory of how successful teams develop and function. For this, the student must write a 1-2 page paper explaining the importance of working in teams in the workplace, give an example (from experience) of working with a successful team and an unsuccessful team, and reflect on this experience. The student must also include an example of a time they helped resolve a conflict in the workplace.
4. Skills related to working with Diverse Populations
In this section the student must demonstrate application of skills in dealing with the broad range of human diversity.
- Provide evidence of successful interactions with members of diverse groups, such as supervisor's commendations or awards.
- Successful completion of formal diversity training programs, including in-house training.
To complete the section, the student must write a short paper (2 pages or less) discussing how they have experienced diversity in the workplace. Was this a positive or negative experience? What did he/she learn from this experience? What will he/she do in the future to increase his/her diversity experiences?
- To demonstrate self-awareness, the student will write a two page, double-spaced, typed summary. The summary will discuss the student's opinions regarding personal strengths, weaknesses and their likely impact upon his/her prospective workplace interpersonal effectiveness.
- Then, the student will identify one personal and one professional goal. The student will write an action plan for accomplishing his/her chosen goals. The goals and action plan will be included in the portfolio.
Completed portfolios should be submitted to the Dean of Social Sciences for review by the HMRL Faculty Review Committee.
