Monique Cribbs, Career Services Coordinator, provides an in-depth review of the diverse resources available through MCC’s Career Services area.

Monique explains what students experience when they access Career Services, and how they can match their career aspirations with the right mix of courses using the Holland Code, an industry-standard interest’s identifier.

Monique discusses the wide range of services available to current students and alumni, as well as partnering relationships with Nebraska Works and Workforce Solutions, job boards that help match qualified applicants with potential employers. Monique highlights forthcoming exciting technological capabilities including a mobile app for mobile devices, a dynamic web portal and a revised Career Services web site.

Heather Nelson, Entrepreneurship Program Manager and Instructor, discusses MCC's entrepreneurship program.

Heather reviews the course offerings and the attributes of those most suited to the exciting challenge of being an entrepreneur. She highlights the many networking and growth opportunities available to students at the annual Heartland Entrepreneur Conference.

The conference keynote address, guest speakers, and competitions give participants an inside look at the world of entrepreneurship.

MCC’s Fort Omaha Campus

Host: Kent Pavelka Guest: James Cloyd

James Cloyd, dean, Fort Omaha Campus, discusses the opportunities and challenges as dean of MCC's flagship campus.

James gives a brief overview of the history of the Fort, and his own childhood recollections of playing football on the campus Parade Grounds. He connects the past to the present as he discusses new activities such as the Table Talk series where he and campus staff connect with students to learn first-hand what they want in their education.

James highlights programs and courses offered including the Horticulture, Culinary and Land Management Systems program, and the "Fab Lab" Fabrication Laboratory.

Looking to the future, James discusses planned campus expansion including Construction Education and The Center for Advanced and Emerging Technologies buildings.


8:00 PMSouth Africa: A Scholar’s Perspective

Host: Margaret Bumann Guest: Dawne Y. Curry, Ph.D., Heather Doxon

Dawne Y. Curry, Ph.D., Associate Professor, History and Ethnic Studies, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Heather Doxon ethics student, UNL, discuss apartheid in South Africa.

Professor Curry and host Margaret Bumann present a historical perspective on apartheid, and then review the social and cultural impact on the people of South Africa from past to present.

Author of Apartheid on a Black Isle: Removal and Resistance in Alexandra, South Africa, Dr. Curry cites conditions during the near half century of apartheid rule, and compares the pre and post-apartheid climate. She then discusses the important role Nelson Mandela played and South Africa's current environment and hope for the future.

Heather Doxon presents a student's point-of-view and discusses her travels and experiences to South Africa.

 

 


The Annual Fort Omaha Intertribal Powwow

Host: Kent Pavelka Guest: Garan Coons

Emcee for the 22nd Annual Fort Omaha Intertribal Powwow and presenter in Metro's Diversity Matters Film and Lecture Series, Garan Coons discusses his background as an Oglala Lakota Navajo Native American.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona and raised Winnebago Ho-Chunk, Garan Coons studies Native American customs at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Founder of the Many Moccasins Dance Troupe he is renowned as a professional singer, dancer, and storyteller, illustrating Native American culture to international audiences.


The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation

Host: Kent Pavelka Guest: Lynne M. Jackson

Lynne M. Jackson, President and Founder of the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation, St. Louis, Missouri, is the great-great granddaughter of Dred and Harriett Scott. She discusses the impact of the Dred Scott Decision and its relevance in today’s race relations. She sets the backdrop of the events that led to the famous 1857 Supreme Court case that held that African-Americans, whether slave or free could not be American citizens. The case itself hastened the start of the Civil War.

She discusses the continuing work of The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation to commemorate, educate, and not forget the struggle for freedom, equality, citizenship and justice.


Nebraska Historic Storytelling

 Host: Kent Pavelka  Guest: Cherrie Beam-Clarke

Cherrie Beam-Clarke, native Nebraskan and Nebraska Historic Storyteller reprises her role as pioneer Mariah Monahan.Cherrie tells captivating stories depicting Nebraska life from 1860 to 1895 including discussion about Christmas on the prairie, dealing with injuries, prairie fires, rattlesnake bites, harvesting Nebraska "coal," living on cornmeal, and the harsh, endless monotonous labor of pioneer life. These entertaining and educational excerpts are from Beam-Clarke's live presentations, "Promise in a New Land," "The Courage to Continue," and "Grit 'n Gumption."


Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, 1Q 2014 Review

Hosts: Kent Pavelka Guest: David Brown

Chamber president David Brown highlights key economic indicators and anticipated growth in the greater Omaha area for 2014. David discusses the continued strength of area businesses and industries, as well as planned expansion through 2014.

He discusses the serendipitous no-cost national branding and marketing of “Omaha!” by Denver Broncos football quarterback Payton Manning.

Showing several video clips of Manning’s quarterback cadence of “Omaha!” and the good natured fun of local and Denver chambers of commerce David explains the unforeseen positive metrics and advertising benefits from Peyton Manning’s use of “Omaha!”

David explains planned chamber activities through the first half of 2014, and appeal of Omaha to nationally known companies.

Also highlighted is the new Prosper Omaha Strategy, a five-year campaign to create a quality community, investing in people, education and jobs.

This program presents an optimistic economic outlook for the greater Omaha area through growth and job expansions.

MCC: A Place to Start

Kirk Ahrends, Dean of Applied Technology, and Ingrid Berlin, Dean of Enrollment Services, highlight MCC's unique A Place to Start Program.

At the cost of regular tuition and without having to satisfy any prerequisites, anyone call enroll in a wide variety of courses at Metropolitan Community College.

Giving anyone a chance "to stick their toe in the water" of a college education without any pre-tests, A Place to Start offers nearly forty career-oriented and several general education program areas from which to choose classes.

Changing the Narrative:Stories from the Frontline

Host: Kent Pavelka Guest: Maria Hinojosa

Maria Hinojosa, Anchor & executive producer NPR's Latino USA President, Futuro Media Group discusses the changing landscape of America, its demographics, and cultural landscape.

Based on her lecture, Changing the Narrative: Stories from the Frontline of the New Mainstream, she explains how the predominant Caucasian “Narrative” of America will change by the year 2030 or 2050 to a pre-dominant mix of Latinos, Asians, African-Americans and other heritages creating a “New Mainstream.”

Using a brief video clip from her documentary “America by the Numbers,” Maria demonstrates the already changing landscape throughout many parts of the United States.

She localizes the discussion by relating ongoing activities on immigration and housing in Fremont, Nebraska connecting it to the national scene.
