Metro Transit

Antonio TillerAntonio Tiller, Records Assistant, FOC

Why did you decide to ride Metro Transit to work?
It’s cheap and convenient and helps me stay on schedule. Knowing I’ll be catching a bus helps me prioritize my morning so I can be ready to get to work on time.
How long have you been doing it?

I’ve worked at my current MCC position for 4+ years; so, it turns out that I have mostly ridden the bus here that whole time.
How did you find the best transit route for you to get to work?

I’ve ridden the bus for a long time and knew which bus I would need to get to Fort Omaha.
What do you enjoy about riding transit?

I can sit down and read my Sports Illustrated or a novel. It’s one of the few time where I can actually get some reading done. I also like being able to interact with people like myself. Sometimes I see people I know on the bus—friends, relatives, former classmates and coworkers. That helps me feel connected to people and the community.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to use Metro Transit to get to MCC?
You can use Metro Transit’s website or phone their customer service for assistance. Just say where you’re starting from and where you desire to go. In most cases, the customer service line can tell you to the minute when to be at your (bus) stop.

Jane Smith Jane Smith, Faculty Secretary, SOC

Why did you decide to ride Metro Transit to work?
The cost of gasoline, and it’s good for the environment.

How long have you been doing it?
Three years

How did you find the best transit route for you to get to work?
I saw the bus go by, noticed its number and when it comes, and got a printed schedule.

What do enjoy about riding transit?
It’s nice in snow and ice, and I don’t need a health club because I walk 1½ miles to and from the bus stop. It also gets you ready to use transit in other cities.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to use Metro Transit to get to MCC?
Be willing to walk a little. Try to take just one bus per trip.

Why did you decide to ride Metro Transit to work?

About 5 years ago my wife and I made a decision to get by with one vehicle.  Several things factored in; we live downtown and parking is not free.  Cars are expensive and a poor investment.  We feel it is a small contribution to greening our environment.  Walking to the bus stop or riding our bikes helps keep us active and mobile.

How long have you been doing it?

I started riding the bus about three years ago when I was at South Campus and rode regularly.   I have just begun riding to Fort campus and have rode three times in three past two weeks.

How did you find the best transit route for you to get to work?
I use the Trip Planner at Metro website.

What do enjoy about riding transit?
As mentioned, it allows me to own one car rather than two.  It makes me feel like I am making a small contribution to the environment by reducing single occupancy vehicles.   I have a chance to interact with MCC students and others who live and work near me that I might not otherwise interact with.  It gives me an added sense of security, in that I may someday be too old to drive, but I will never be too old to ride the bus!

What advice do you have for someone who wants to use Metro Transit to get to MCC?
Try it.   How well it works for you does depend on where you live.  Have $1.25 in your pocket.  Do the math on what it might mean to your retirement savings if you got rid of a car.

Bicycle

Curtis BryantCurtis Bryant, Online Course Administrator and Human Relations Skills Instructor, FOC

Why did you decide to ride your bicycle to work?
I started bicycle commuting to save money and reduce my environmental impact, and as I get older, I also appreciate the health benefits. And I feel so much better when I ride!
How long have you been doing it?
I’ve done bicycle commuting off and on my whole adult life. While a graduate student at UNO, I avoided parking hassles by riding my bike to campus. I got most serious about it about almost four years ago, when I started cycling to work at FOC.
How did you find your route to work?
Activate Omaha’s bicycle commuter map helped me plan safe routes.
What do enjoy about bike commuting?
I most enjoy how good it makes me feel. I also enjoy putting less gas in the car.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to try cycling to MCC?
First, make sure your bike is in good condition and comfortable to ride. If it isn’t, you won’t enjoy riding. I like to have a comfortable seat, fenders, carrying rack, chain guard, bell, and a strong lock. Use Activate Omaha’s bicycle commuter map or online mapping tools to plan your route, and practice riding it on a non-work day. After my practice ride, I rode a bus home because I was tired and worked up to cycling each way. You’ll also need to plan what to wear and how to freshen up at the office.

Carpool

Hope MiteHope Mite, Purchasing Technician, FOC

Why did you decide to carpool?
We have one car and my husband works totally different hours than I do, so it is easier and more affordable to carpool. I share the cost of gas money so it saves both of us money on gas since we share the ride.
How long have you been doing it?
5 years.
How did you find your carpool partner?
I just asked a co-worker for ride one day and it’s been going ever since.
What do enjoy about carpooling?
My carpool partner is a sweetie. It’s nice to have good company on the ride to and from work.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to try carpooling to MCC?
Find someone that is dependable and someone that you are compatible with for an enjoyable time carpooling.
 Funny Story
We’ve been carpooling so long and get along so well, we have nicknames for each other. Kathy is KB’ster and she calls me Hoppy.

Kathy BarrettKathy Barrett, Accounts Payable Specialist, FOC 30

Why did you decide to carpool?
Well, quite simply because Hope needed a ride. So I gave her one once and it turned into regular carpooling.
How long have you been doing it?
5 years.
How did you find your carpool partner?
Hope needed a ride, found me and asked me for a ride. It was easy for me.
What do enjoy about carpooling?
I really enjoy the company.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to try carpooling to MCC?
Be sure to get an agreement between each other about what is expected and it is just as important sometimes to agree to what is not expected.
Funny Story
One night Hope had asked me and someone else for a ride home. We all had a good laugh when she walked out of the building and there were two of us waiting for her.
