Play to showcase North Omaha history Feb. 7 at MCC

OMAHA, Neb. — Metropolitan Community College, in collaboration with the Union for Contemporary Art, will present the play “More Than Neighbors” on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. inside the Swanson Conference Center at the Institute for Culinary Arts on MCC’s Fort Omaha Campus, 32nd Street and Sorensen Parkway. The event is free and open to the public.

“More Than Neighbors” was written by local playwright and educator Denise Chapman. The play explores the memories and perspectives of those who participated in, and were impacted by, the dramatic construction of the North Freeway in Omaha. The play also displays how the freeway project contributed to the destruction of a community still recovering from civil unrest and rioting in the mid-to-late 1960s.

This presentation is funded in part by Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment in support of efforts that enable citizens to explore Nebraska heritage, build community awareness and strengthen awareness and understanding of our shared cultural, historical and humanities-based experiences.
